Elizabeth has the latest food news including a VERY troubling story.
According to USA Today… “Published in the Journal of Exposure Science & Environmental Epidemiology on Thursday, the study found that 80% of tested Americans had the chemical chlormequat in their systems, a plant regulating agent that is currently not approved for use on edible crops in the U.S.”
Discovered back in the 1950’s as a herbicide and growth regulator for use in ornamental plants, chlormequat has NOT been used on food crops in the United States, but it was allowed in foreign countries. In April 2023, the EPA announced a proposal to allow the use of chlormequat on imported food crops such as barley, oats and wheat. Following the lead by the FDA, (where NO independent testing is conducted) the EPA seemingly accepted the producer’s “Human Health Risk Assessment” that indicated “no dietary, residential, or aggregate (i.e., combined dietary and residential exposures) risks of concern.”
Thus in your breakfast, you’ve been eating chlormequat, a toxic herbicide! Exposure to high levels of chlormequat has been linked to developmental toxicity in animals.
Why is the government agency that is charged with protecting the environment now making rules concerning what is allowed in the food supply?
Why hasn’t the FDA, which IS tasked with protecting the food supply, suddenly quiet? Robert Califf’s FDA has made NO announcements of recalls or warnings announced any recalls or taken ANY corrective action!
Why are food companies relying upon FOREIGN sources of wheat, barley and oats to produce food products for the AMERICAN consumers? Are these foreign foods being labeled properly? This falls under the purview of the USDA and yet we’ve heard nothing from them either.
This is outrageous and an example of why all three agencies, the USDA, the EPA and especially the FDA must be held accountable.
