Most people who’ve visited the Lincoln Memorial since 1922 never knew there’s a room underneath it. The Undercroft, the cavernous space beneath the main chamber, was never supposed to exist at all. When workers finished the foundation in the 1910s, they discovered a hollow chamber large enough to walk through, its concrete pillars draped in stalactites formed by decades of mineral seepage from above. For most of the twentieth century the space was sealed off, forgotten, and used only for storage. Then the National Park Service began a major restoration project and the Undercroft was opened to the public for the first time. What visitors find down there is unlike anything else on the National Mall. The original construction graffiti is still on the walls. Scaffolding used during the 1960s civil rights rallies above is still stored there. The acoustics are otherworldly. And the columns holding up one of the most iconic buildings in American history stretch down into a space that feels like the subterranean foundation of the country itself. Elizabeth takes you below the surface of American history to a place most tourists walk right over without knowing it exists. This is what the Lincoln Memorial looks like from underneath.
