For Immediate Release – An Open Letter To Speaker Weatherford

For Immediate Release
March 25, 2013

Mr. Speaker,

It has come to our attention that Committee Chair, Representative Matthew Caldwell appears to have an inherent conflict of interest with regard to HB1233.

This bill would require GMO labeling in the State of Florida.

Representative Caldwell has previously accepted a contribution from Southern Gardens Citrus Processing Corporation. Southern Gardens has conducted field trials of GMO citrus as part of the process to get GMO citrus approved to put on the market.

Calls by constituents demanding a position on this issue and requesting GMOs be placed on the agenda go largely unreturned.

Please act now to replace Representative Caldwell as Committee Chair without damaging the standing of this bill in the legislature.

Respectfully,
Elizabeth Dougherty
